Field Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) treatment and removal

Horsetail marestail removal treatment swansea damage tarmac driveway South Wales Swansea Cardiff

What is Field/Common Horsetail?

Horsetail (Marestail) , one of the most ancient plants on Earth, spreads through two distinct methods. Initially, it produces spores during the early to late spring, which are then carried by the wind. Secondly, on a more local scale, its root system forms an expansive network of deep rooted rhizomes.

It's crucial to highlight that Horsetail and Marestail are commonly  confused, despite their inherent dissimilarity. Marestail thrives in  aquatic habitats, and although there may be a surface-level similarity  to Horsetail, notable differences distinguish these two plants.

Damage

Common Horsetail features rhizomes in its root system that spread quickly and deeply into the soil. The majority of these rhizomes are close to the surface, some may extend up to 2 meters below ground. Even a small piece of surviving rhizome can trigger new growth, underscoring the need to eliminate them to prevent further expansion.

Field Horsetail can often damage tarmac. Despite its strength, Horsetail's root system generally lacks the power to significantly damage building foundations. However, it's important to manage its growth.

Identification

Field Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the UK known for its distinct growth stages. In spring, it develops brown, hollow stems topped with spore cones, creating a unique appearance. After spore dispersal, the stems turn vibrant green, resembling young fir-tree shoots. These can typically grow up to 2ft in height.
